What Is Roulette?

Roulette is a game of chance that's played in almost every physical and virtual casino across the globe.  Roulette has a long and fascinating history that goes back hundreds of years and has three main variants; French, English, and American Roulette. Even though a total beginner may find the game's board and wheel intimidating, the goal of roulette is actually pretty straightforward: place a wager on the number—or combination of numbers—that the ball will ultimately rest on.

The player has a plethora of possibilities with every turn of the wheel. A player has the option to wager on consecutive numbers, single numbers, or rows of numbers. In addition, among other things, a player may play colours or odd or even numbers. A wager on a single number, which includes the 0 and 00, pays 35 to 1. Wagers on odd or even pay 1 for 1, black or red, or even money.

Roulette Rules: Understanding the Basics

How is roulette played? Before you start putting bets, you must comprehend the roulette rules. The good news is that there aren't many bullet points in the roulette rules, making them simple to comprehend:

  • Predicting the ball's landing spot on a numbered wheel is the goal.
  • Stack chips on the number or groups of numbers to put your bet.
  • Depending on how accurate your prediction was, you might win between 1 and 35 times your wager.

In essence, you're putting bets on a numbered board in an attempt to anticipate where the ball will land; if you guess correctly, you win.

How Does Roulette Work?

A board and a rotating roulette wheel with numbers divided into sections along the edge are used to play roulette. The croupier will spin the roulette wheel in one way while spinning a ball into the wheel in the opposing direction while you play live roulette at a casino roulette table. The ball will slow down as it spins in the wheel and eventually land in a numbered divider. Anybody who placed a wager on that number wins if it lands on the winning number. You can start using your chips to make bets again when winning bets have been settled and lost bets have been removed from the table.

It's important to remember that while easy to play, roulette is a complete game of chance. You have the option to wager higher by taking on more risk, or you can reduce your risk and play for smaller prizes. Roulette is incredibly popular because it offers you the most versatility and accessibility when it comes to playing casino table games.

Roulette Bets & Payouts

There are lots of different bets and payouts players can receive, and we’ll break these down more comprehensively in the following sections. Overall though, the basic paytable for roulette is as follows:

  • A single number bet (called Straight Up) pays 35:1
  • A double number bet (called a Split) pays 17:1
  • A triple number bet (called a Street) pays 11:1
  • A four-number bet (called a Corner bet) pays 8:1
  • A five-number bet pays 6:1
  • A six-number bet (called a Line) pays 2:1
  • Twelve numbers (split into first, second, and third dozen) pays 2:1
  • 12 numbers in a row, (called a Column bet) pays 2:1
  • 18 numbers, either 1-8 or 19-36 will pay even money.
  • Red or black pays even money
  • Odd or even bets pay even money

Types of Bet in Roulette

The wagers used in roulette are split into two types which are known as inside and outside bets.

Inside Bets

Inside bets are those made on specific numbers or number sets. These include the straight-up, split, street, corner, and line wagers. Inside bets tend to offer higher payouts because of their reduced odds.

Outside Bets

Outside bets are those made on categories, you can think of them as the more generic bets. Examples of outside bets include high/low, red/black, even/odd, dozen, and column bets.

How to Play

To play roulette, simply follow these steps:

  1. To play roulette you'll first find a table with a minimum bet that you are happy with. When playing real-world roulette the dealer will provide you with chips, if you're playing at an online casino you'll need to add funds to your account.
  2. Once you have your chips or your fund you are free to place them anywhere on the roulette table layout. Different bets have different requirements with outside bets typically having a higher minimum of 5-10x meaning a table with a £1 minimum wager will require £5-10 to be wagered on an outside bet. Your chip (or chips, depending on how much you want to wager) is placed on the square that has the number you want to bet on in order to place your bet. Place your chip(s) along the edge of the three numbers you have selected if you wish to wager on a column. To place your chips for a square bet, place them where those numbers intersect.
  3. The croupier will spin the wheel and spin the ball into it while bets are being put. Until the croupier says, "No more bets," you can keep placing chips down or move the ones you have previously placed. After that, no more wagers are accepted until the outcome of that game has been revealed.
  4. Winning bets are those made that cover the segment that the roulette ball stops in. Once all payouts have been made the betting round will begin again.
